This session will offer perspectives on what constitutes “successful” product stewardship, consider the degree to which success is being achieved, and identify the most promising approaches for maximizing progress going forward. It will provide a menu of policy options that create incentives for manufacturers to incorporate environmental concerns into the design of products and offer firsthand perspectives from intended beneficiaries of product stewardship: local and state governments. We will also explore the changing role of local government as producers assume greater responsibility for product end-of-life management.
