Tell a Friend About This EventTell a Friend

Marine debris—much of which is comprised of plastic consumer packaging materials—represents a global challenge with major repercussions for ocean ecosystems and human health. It is also a costly problem for governments, who are trying to address marine debris through recycling and cleanup efforts. This webinar will examine the problem and explore a range of strategies to minimize the impacts of marine debris.

Marine debris represents a global challenge with major repercussions for ocean ecosystems and human health. The majority of marine debris consists of land-based disposable products that pollute our oceans, coastal waters, and beaches. These materials are harming marine wildlife and aquatic species, which can die from consuming or becoming entangled in the debris.  This is also a costly problem for governments, who are currently addressing marine debris through recycling and cleanups efforts. The connection between marine debris and packaging materials is significant – according to the Ocean Conservancy, six of the top ten contributors of coastal litter are plastic packaging items: bottle caps and lids, beverage containers, bags, eating utensils, food wrappers, and straws. This webinar will examine the problem and will explore a range of strategies to minimize the impacts of marine debris, ranging from source reduction and prevention, to improved packaging recycling through voluntary and mandatory approaches.
