|Overview: ||For close to two decades, the Research Triangle Institute (RIT) and the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) collaborated to develop a solution for measuring, analyzing, and comparing the lifecycle-based impacts of solid waste management methods, including product stewardship. Now available online, that solution—known as the Municipal Solid Waste Decision Support Tool—enables local, state, and national government agencies, as well as some private organizations and commercial institutions, to customize the measurement, analysis, and comparison of the environmental impacts that they deem most important to them (e.g., cost, emissions, energy reduction). In this webinar, hear from EPA and RIT insiders about the need for this Decision Support Tool and how it can help users make product stewardship decisions and achieve their impact reduction goals.|

Scott Cassel, CEO/Founder, Product Stewardship Institute
Scott Cassel is the Chief Executive Officer and Founder of the Product Stewardship Institute (PSI). Prior to founding the Institute in 2000, Scott served seven years as the Director of Waste Policy and Planning for the Massachusetts Executive Office of Environmental Affairs. He is a founding Board Member and past-President of the North American Hazardous Materials Management Association, whose mission is to reduce the toxicity of the municipal waste stream. He is also a founding Board Member of the Global Product Stewardship Council, which harmonizes product stewardship programs internationally. Scott has worked on product and waste management issues for the past 30 years, for a start-up solid waste management company, a non-profit statewide environmental group, and several other government agencies, including the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection and the Massachusetts Water Resources Authority. He is author of a comprehensive book chapter on product stewardship in the 2008 Handbook on Household Hazardous Waste. He was also a syndicated newspaper columnist in Massachusetts, and a former columnist for the Boston Business Journal. Scott has a master's degree in environmental policy and dispute resolution from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, and an undergraduate degree in Geology and Environmental Studies from the University of Pennsylvania.
John Waffenschmidt, Vice President of Environmental Science and Community Affairs, Covanta Energy
John G. Waffenschmidt is currently Vice President of Environmental Science and Community Affairs at Covanta Energy, with responsibility for the development of community outreach policies and practices, reduction in waste stream toxicity, development of environmental justice policies and practices, and liaison with various academic and NGO organizations. He is currently a member of the Pennsylvania Environmental Justice Advisory Board and a board member of the Regional Plan Association, Long Island chapter. He has been named a BOCES Education Partner, a Bronze Telly Award Winner, and has received the Pennsylvania Governor’s Award for Environmental Excellence. John was previously employed with the New York City Department of Sanitation, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, and the Bureau of Outdoor Recreation. John is a Certified Ecologist with the Ecological Society of America, holds a Bachelor of Science in social ecology from New Paltz State University of New York, and holds a Masters in environmental biology from Queens College.
Susan Thorneloe, Senior Chemical Engineer, Air Pollution Prevention and Control Division, United States Environmental Protection Agency (U.S. EPA)
Susan is a chemical engineer in the Emissions Characterization & Prevention Branch that helps to develop and apply new technology for characterizing emissions. Susan’s current research focus is to evaluate the fate of metals in air pollution control residues from coal-fired power plants. Susan has been with EPA since 1984 and has been awarded over 25 EPA awards including 7 Bronze medals for her leadership and innovation in finding more efficient and effective solutions to environmental management. She has led the application of life-cycle assessment in providing a more holistic approach to environmental management of waste and materials. One of Susan’s first jobs with EPA was to characterize, model, and measure emissions from municipal solid waste landfills. Susan has conducted research collaboratively with RTI International, North Carolina State University, stakeholders including U.S. Conference of Mayors, National Association of Counties, Association of State and Territorial Solid Waste Management Offices, and over 200 different stakeholders and domestic and international experts in solid waste management, recycling, life-cycle assessment, and full-cost accounting.
Keith Weitz, Director, Sustainability and Environmental Assessment Program, RTI International
Keith Weitz is director of the Sustainability and Environmental Assessment program at RTI International. He specializes in waste management, energy technology assessment, climate change research, and life cycle assessment. Mr. Weitz has been working with the U.S. EPA and others to analyze cost and environmental aspects of waste management systems for 20 years. Mr. Weitz holds a Master of Environmental Management from Duke University and a B.A. in Economics and Business Administration from Augustana College.
