The Thermostat Recycling Corporation (TRC) is a not-for-profit corporation owned by three thermostat manufacturers that was formed to facilitate the collection and recycling of all brands of used, wall-mounted mercury-switch thermostats. Heating, ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC) wholesalers and certain contractors can become members for a $15 one-time fee that provides a collection box and shipping labels. National Mercury Switch Recovery Program - March 2006 Statement of Principles for Agreement. Representatives from the vehicle manufacturers, steelmakers, vehicle dismantles, vehicle shredders, environmental community, states and the US EPA have reached agreement on a statement of principles detailing the elements of a national program for recovering mercury switches from scrap cars and light trucks before they are shredded for recycling. The parties are now working to complete a formal agreement.
