State and Local Mercury Initiatives

Northeast Waste Management Officials Association (NEWMOA) is a nonprofit, nonpartisan interstate association of the waste officials in CT, ME, MA, NH, NJ, NY, RI, and VT. NEWMOA’s mission is to explore, develop, promote, and implement environmentally sound solutions for the reduction and management of materials and waste, and for the remediation of contaminated sites, in order to achieve a clean and healthy environment. NEWMOA’s extensive mercury resources include:

Oregon Environmental Council’s (OEC) Mercury Pollution Prevention Project – This initiative seeks to reduce the discharge of mercury 50% by 2006, and put Oregon on a path to eliminate mercury discharges completely by 2020. Strategies include working with a multi-stakeholder Solution Team, passing legislation, and working directly with businesses to reduce mercury pollution.
