Product Stewardship in the Rural Northeast Project

Did you know?

Through product stewardship programs, local government and retailers in the northeastern U.S. can provide recycling opportunities to residents for rechargeable batteriesmercury thermostats, and mercury auto switches at no cost. Another program offers free recycling for tires collected at community waterway cleanup events.

Through a grant from the U.S. Department of Agriculture, PSI is working to increase access to these programs in the rural Northeastern United States. Although these programs are often available in  larger towns, many residents in more rural areas currently have no convenient way to recycle these products. These programs are simple – the stewardship organization will provide you with supplies and pay for shipping; local governments and retailers simply provides the space to collect these items.
