Do your part to reduce tire waste by following these simple steps:
Extend the life of your tires
Earth911 provides a list of useful tips that will extend the life of your tires including maintaining proper tire pressure as specified by the manufacturer, rotate your tires every 4,000 miles and service your car with an alignment when appropriate, and avoid excessive braking.
Recycle your tires
Use Earth911’s search tool to find out if there is a recycling center near you that accepts tires. You can also contact your local solid waste management agency to see if your community offers events or specific days that tires are accepted for recycling free of charge.
Report illegal dumping
The U.S. EPA recommends that if you witness the illegal dumping of tires to contact your local law enforcement agency with the date, time, and location where the illegal dumping took place and a description of the person who is mishandling their waste.
Visit PSI’s tires project page and learn more about PSI's efforts to promote tire stewardship programs, view recent press articles, legislation, and find other resources on this issue.
Contact Your Legislator
You can also contact your state and local representative and tell them directly that they should sponsor legislation that would create a more robust tire recycling program in your state. If you are unsure of you legislator, check out the Library of Congress's website.
