Mercury Thermostats - Illinois EPA and the Product Stewardship Institute
Many thermostats contain mercury—a toxic pollutant that harms the environment and human health. Under Illinois law, heating, ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC) contractors and service technicians must recycle mercury-switch thermostats that are taken out of service. HVAC wholesale distributors are required to act as collection locations for mercury-switch thermostats.
The Thermostat Recycling Corporation (TRC), an industry-funded organization, operates a mercury thermostat collection and recycling program for wholesalers, retailers, and contractors. Participating is free except for the one-time cost of a thermostat collection bucket. TRC covers the cost of shipping and recycling the thermostats.
Certain contractors are eligible to obtain their own collection bins. This is ideal for contractors who often remove mercury thermostats and for contractors in rural areas where wholesalers are not readily accessible. Contractors who employ 7 or more technicians or those who serve rural areas may obtain a collection bin.
The Product Stewardship Institute (PSI) and the Illinois EPA are conducting a pilot program, with Funding from the U.S. EPA, to reduce mercury pollution in Illinois. For a limited time, you can receive a FREE TRC mercury thermostat collection bucket (a $25 value). This program will run from May 1, 2013 through April 30, 2013.
