IEPA and PSI Thermostat Pilot Program 2015-2016

The Problem

Many older household thermostats contain mercury—a toxic heavy metal that can cause serious health problems when it enters the environment. Recycling your thermostat is an easy way to negate the negative public health effects mercury can pose.

A Solution

Recycle your old mercury thermostat and replace it with a programmable, digital thermostat. You'll save energy and money, and protect the environment.

Through October 15, 2016, you'll earn a $5 coupon for every mercury thermostat you recycle at participating Ace and TrueValue stores. Use the coupon to buy a new digital thermostat or any other supplies you may need (standard Ace and TrueValue coupon restrictions apply). Please recycle no more than 4 thermostats at a time to any one location.

This pilot program provides residents and small heating and cooling contractors with easy, convenient locations for dropping off and recycling their mercury thermostats. Just follow these instructions:

  1. Remove mercury-containing thermostats from your home or the buildings you service or maintain.
  2. Bring the mercury thermostats to any of the Ace and TrueValue stores listed below whose staff will place them in the Thermostat Recycling Corporation (TRC) recycling bin.
  3. Get a $5 coupon from the store clerk for each recycled thermostat.
  4. Use the coupon(s) immediately in that store to buy a digital thermostat or any other supplies you may need (standard Ace/TrueValue coupon restrictions apply).
  5. We ask that you return no more than 4 thermostats at a time to any single store location.

Recycle your thermostat and earn $5 today!

A Little Background

This pilot program is operated by the Illinois Environmental Protection Agency (IEPA) and the Product Stewardship Institute (PSI). Through this program, PSI and IEPA aim to protect public health by increasing awareness of the need and opportunity to recycle mercury thermostats.

This program builds on the 2010 Illinois thermostat recycling law, which requires the thermostat industry to set up collection and recycling programs for mercury thermostats. The Thermostat Recycling Corporation (TRC) was created by the industry to collect and recycle mercury thermostats, reducing waste and saving taxpayers and local governments money. While the law encourages heating, ventilation, and cooling (HVAC) contractors and service technicians to recycle mercury thermostats, and HVAC wholesalers to serve as collection sites, many homeowners and smaller contractors don’t know that these collection sites exist. Furthermore, many may not realize the dangers mercury can pose, or the energy and cost savings they can reap from new digital thermostats. To promote this special pilot program for homeowners and small contractors, TRC offers free collection bins to participating hardware stores, normally a $25 per bin value.

The program also helps participating retailers build a positive reputation as community and environmental service providers, while increasing customer loyalty, foot traffic, and sales -- all at little cost to them. If you have questions about the program, please contact Becky Jayne of Illinois EPA at (217) 524-9642 or Suna Bayrakal of PSI at (617) 671-0616.
