A 'Package' Deal: Europe's Extended Producer Responsibility Alliance

Wednesday, November 20, 2013

1:30 - 3:00 p.m. EST

Producer responsibility for packaging is a proven concept in more than 30 European countries. In fact, it has been implemented there as part of national policy goals to boost the economy through the collection and recycling of used household packaging.

The Extended Producer Responsibility Alliance (EXPRA), founded in 2013, represents packaging waste recovery and recycling organizations in 17 European Union member nations, and serves as a single authoritative voice on policy-related matters. It is also a hub for exchanging knowledge, insights, and best practices.

In this webinar, Joachim Quoden, managing director of EXPRA, will provide an overview and update on EPR legislation in Europe, and explore what efforts are underway to identify best practices, analyze data, and determine the success rate of EPR programs for packaging. He will also discuss why EXPRA was formed.

Prof. Thomas Lindhqvist, who coined the term Extended Producer Responsibility in 1990, will discuss how his brainchild has come to fruition, and which programs are closest to what he had envisioned more than two decades ago.
