When the DEA published its final rule last September, they expanded the number and types of entities that may be permitted to collect unwanted medications, making way for more numerous and convenient collection options for consumers. The rule allows manufacturers, distributors, reverse distributors, narcotics treatment programs, retail pharmacies, and hospitals/clinics with an on-site pharmacy to voluntarily apply for DEA authorization and maintain on-site drug collection receptacles and mail-back programs. It has been widely accepted that retail pharmacies would provide the most convenient location for unused drug collection to the broadest population.
